WE LIKE: Howe Gelb

Dass sein Groß­va­ter aus dem Bur­gen­land stammt, erzählt Howe Gelb gele­gent­lich bei sei­nen Kon­zer­ten. (Bruck an der Lei­tha, that is.) Bei IMPORT/EXPORT reicht das schon für die fol­gen­de Emp­feh­lung: Wüs­ten­fuchs Howe Gelb tourt mit sei­ner Band „Giant Sand“ gera­de durch Euro­pa; heu­te abend ist Wien dran (Haus der Musik), mor­gen Salz­burg (Arge), dann kom­men die Herr­schaf­ten noch nach Inns­bruck (Treib­haus) und Bre­genz. Dass Gelb vom Weg­ge­hen und Wei­ter­zie­hen singt, passt eben­falls per­fekt zu IMPORT/EXPORT, wie die Lyrics zu „Get to Lea­ve“ zeigen:

Der Voll­stän­dig­keit hal­ber: Kol­le­ge Bruce Springsteen („Born in the USA“) fei­er­te gera­de sei­nen ita­lie­nisch-iri­schen Migra­ti­ons­hin­ter­grund bei der Ver­ga­be des Ellis Island Fami­ly Heri­ta­ge Award:

The Sta­tue of Liber­ty-Ellis Island Foun­da­ti­on, Inc. pres­ents the award to immi­grants or their des­cen­dants „who have made a major con­tri­bu­ti­on to the Ame­ri­can expe­ri­ence.“ Also hono­red were invest­ment ban­ker Peter G. Peter­son; Avon Chair­man and CEO Andrea Jung, and NBA All-Star Dikem­be Mutombo.

„You can’t real­ly know who you are and whe­re you’­re going unless you know whe­re you came from,“ Springsteen said.

Springsteen’s mate­r­nal gre­at-grand­mo­ther, Raf­fae­la Zeril­li, arri­ved at Ellis Island from Vico Equen­se, Ita­ly, on Oct. 3, 1900, with five kids in tow.

„I docked at Ellis Island in a city of light and spi­res,“ their famous des­cen­dant later wro­te in his song Ame­ri­can Land, a sto­ry not unli­ke their own.

Zudem arbei­tet Springsteen gera­de an einem Album , das den Schick­sa­len ille­ga­ler Ein­wan­de­rer in Ari­zo­na auf der Spur ist – womit der Kreis zu Howe Gelb wie­der geschlos­sen wäre: 

„The songs on the album tell the sto­ry of Rober­to y Maria, two undo­cu­men­ted immi­grants who try to live their lives as faithful par­ents, but are dis­cri­mi­na­ted against by White poli­ce offi­cers, evil govern­ment offi­ci­als, and White Ari­zo­na ran­chers who mista­ke them for drug smugg­lers. “Bet­ter off Dead,” an effec­ti­ve bal­lad about Roberto’s fee­lings after being raci­al­ly pro­fi­led at a bow­ling alley, will be pro­du­ced by Latin sen­sa­ti­on Marc Antho­ny.
